Sickness, English, and Some Baking – Enfermedad, inglés y un poquito de hornear

Before I start this post off, I just want to address the bilingual title for this post. From now on, due to high demand from family, all blog posts will be in English and Spanish! This means practice for me and a more accessible blog for both those who live here and those back home. It also means that it may take me a little longer to write posts and my Spanish won’t be perfect (neither will my English haha), but I will do my best and I hope everyone enjoys this new feature 🙂

Okay, so it’s been nearly a week since I posted and it honestly doesn’t feel like it since so much has been happening and yet nothing has happened? Time works strangely here though I suppose that’s what happens when you don’t have to go to school everyday. Anyways, part of the last week I spent somewhat ill with a stomach bug. It was kind of awful and I felt like death but I survived!

On Sunday, we went to El Metropolitano with our extended family. I snapped a photo of Kelpi and Elías on the rocking horses, both looking rather funny.
Andrés clambered about on the play structures at the park and I might have joined him but that very day was the day my stomach ailment came on 😦

We’ve been working hard to get a rehearsal schedule down for music by reaching out to other musicians and making music together a couple nights a week. Just yesterday we had a get together with Santiago and his family, as well as our friend Agustín, and jammed for a bit. It was nice to exchange songs and by the looks of it, we’ll be doing more jam sessions like these in the future.

Our instrument corner as of right now, slowly being filled up with the odd instrument from the occasional pana.

Today Kelpi was helping out with slicing up the humongous papaya we brought home from the fruit stand.
My English lesson planning mess.
La confusión de planear el inglés.

With my father, I taught my first English class today and it wound up being fun and not as nerve-wracking as I thought it would be. We went down to Santiago’s house and sat down to teach his sons and a couple other boys. Introductions and likes and dislikes were the main topic of today’s lesson and the boys were quick to learn. We even had them read a little bit of ‘Frog Girl’ (a short story) to them, translating as we went along.

The clouds were very pretty at sunset today.
Las nubes eran muy bonitas hoy.
I made ‘Apples Rolled in Autumn’ cookies today and I doubt there will be any left tomorrow at the rate everyone eats them at.

Meanwhile, the siblings are settling into the school routine, heading off to learn early in the morning and returning mid-afternoon to complete whatever assignments they might have gotten for the day. Shopping for their school supplies has been a rather long and expensive process, the lists including everything from floor cleaner to individual labels for every one of their writing implements and then some. Textbooks are a whole other thing… But that’s just how things are and regardless, this school year will benefit all of them.

Sadly, going to bed needs to happen at some point and I must end this post in order to do so. I hope everyone had a great day and that everyone is doing well these first few weeks of school. I’ll be sure to post again soon so stay tuned… Have a good night ya’ll!

  2. Sounds like life is happening. I wondered if you were out of school already. It’s been a long time since we saw you last. Mateo is a Jr this year. He just returned from 6 weeks in Otavalo, living with the family and working with his uncle at the ministry of agriculture (something with small farms) and with another uncle who works for the municipality, where he taught some English. Simon is in 8th grade.
I enjoy hearing about your life there, and I’m impressed with your writing skills!

  3. Korayma,
Thank you for taking the time to write in your blog. Linda & I love to hear of your family’s adventures and we especially enjoy that you are writing it bilingually! We missed you all at the Salem Irish Ceili dance last night and you all would have enjoyed it very much because we had over 70 dancers and even though it was a fun evening we missed the great energy that your family brings to the dance🙂 Love to you all💕 Brad & Linda Johnson

    1. We saw the photos from last night and it really looked packed! We miss being able to have fun with all of you guys but we’re trying our best to do the odd ‘Haymaker’s Jig’ here and there at the family get togethers. Much love from the Llumiquinga Lapham Family❤️
