There’s nothing better than settling into a nice warm bed after a long day and sleeping in until noon. Or so I’ve heard… It has been impossibly hot on our floor of the house which makes sleeping nigh impossible and sleeping in until noon is most definitely not possible when there’s a house to be cleaned and practices to attend.
No hay nada mejor que acostarse en una cama cómoda después de un día largo y dormir hasta el mediodía. Bueno, eso he escuchado… Hace mucho calor en nuestro piso de la casa y no se puede dormir casi nada y tampoco se puede dormir hasta el mediodía porque hay que limpiar la casa y ir a los ensayos.
My father has taken a liking to photography and the pets often serve as his models. Our family’s dog is named Seymour and he looks especially cute after finally getting a long-overdue haircut.
A mi papá le encanta la fotografía ahora y sabe usar nuestras mascotas como modelos. Nuestro perrito de la familia se llama Seymour y se ve muy bonito ahora que por fin le cortaron el pelo.
Chini is another model and here you can see him lounging between the corrugated roof panels.

Before practice one day, I had some spare time so I walked down with David to get a helix piercing since there wasn’t much else to do. It wasn’t as painful as I thought it was going to be and I’m happy with how it turned out.
Un día, antes del ensayo, tenía tiempo libre y decidí caminar con el David para hacerme un piercing de helix porque no tenía nada más que hacer. No era tan doloroso como pensaba y me gusta como se ve.
My Valentines Day was especially memorable this year, filled to the brim with surprises and food. At eleven, I was at the teatro universitario (university’s auditorium) with my mini cupcakes in hand. We were in the middle of the soundcheck for another recital of student-composed songs and as we moved on and off stage, I handed my cupcakes out with a cheery “¡Feliz día!“
Mi Día del Amor de la Amistad fue muy memorable, lleno de sorpresas y comida. Llegue al teatro universitario a las once de la mañana con pastelitos. Estábamos probando el sonido para otro recital de obras estudiantiles y mientras subimos y bajamos del escenario, repartí mis pastelitos con un “¡Feliz día!”
Once the concert was underway, there was an array of styles played as every composition was realized. I didn’t get to hear too many of them since I had to wait for my turn on stage in the tunnels beneath it.
Empezó el concierto y había una variedad de estilos presentados en cada obra que se realizó. No escuché muchas porque tenía que esperar mi turno en el escenario en los túneles debajo de el.
One of the pieces by a member of both my ensembles, Chris, was accompanied by a dance and all the performances had a prop and balloon decorated background thanks to the students of plasticas (plastic arts).
Una obra de un miembro de mis dos ensambles, Chris, tenía danza y todas las presentaciones tenían utilerías y globos en el fondo gracias a los estudiantes de plásticas (artes plásticas).
Another member of the Afro Ensemble, Henry, won the competition with a piece called “Vientos de Chonta,” the result of a fusion between classical and traditional afro-ecuadorian music.
Otro miembro de Ensamble Afro, Henry, ganó el concurso con su obra, “Vientos de Chonta,” una fusión de música clásica y tradicional afro-ecuatoriana.
The Afro Ensemble was the last group to perform, as we interpreted Sebastian’s piece, “Te Llevare.” It was a fun piece and I enjoyed being part of the singers.
El Ensamble Afro se presentaron al último, interpretando la obra del Sebastian, “Te Llevare.” Fue una obra divertida y me encantó cantar con los cantantes.
After we dragged the last of the marimbas into the FAUCE, a group of twenty of us went to get pizza. The pizza parlor was smaller than my room and we barely managed to fit everyone in there (the couples had to share seats).
Two of the professors had joined us and soon we were scarfing down the pizza while listening to everyone take turns playing the guitar.
Después de cargar las últimas marimbas a la FAUCE, fui con un grupo de veinte compañeros a comer pizza. El restaurante era más pequeño que mi cuarto y casi no alcanzamos todos (las parejas tenían que compartir sillas).
Dos de los profesores se juntaron a nosotros y comimos mucho pizza mientras escuchamos a nuestros amigos tocando la guitarra.
Finally home, I joined in on the festivities with the family. They had made heart-shaped pizzas and cards for everyone and we ate lots of cake and fudge.
Por fin en casa, me uní a las festividades de la familia. Habían hecho pizzas en forma de corazón y cartas para todos y comimos mucho pastel y fudge.
On Sunday, we went over to our Tía Marcia’s for lunch after walking around the Metropolitano for two hours.
Nos fuimos a almorzar donde la tía Marcia después de caminar por el Metropolitano unas dos horas.
We ate encocado de camarón, a coastal ecuadorian dish with coconut milk and shrimp.
Comimos encocado de camarón, un plato ecuatoriano de la costa hecha con leche de coco y camarón.
Afterwards, Gaby and Andy started the carnaval war, spraying carioca (foam) everywhere. Soon that escalated and everyone was spraying each other and we even started throwing around flour and cornstarch.
Carnaval is the couple of days leading up to Ash Wednesday where most of Latin America celebrates with parades and all out war with water, carioca, flour, cornstarch, and even eggs.
Después, Gaby y Andy empezaron la guerra de carnaval, jugando con carioca (espuma). Se volvió más intenso y todos empezamos a jugar, hasta empezamos a lanzar harina y maicena.
Carnaval son los días antes de Miércoles de Ceniza donde la mayoría de Latinoamérica celebra con desfiles y jugando con agua, carioca, harina, maicena, y huevos.
On Monday we bought something weird: Hairy spider fruit! Better known as achotillo or rambutan, this strange fruit has a outer shell that resembles red velcro that covers a grape-like fruit with a fibrous seed in the middle.
Compramos algo raro este lunes: ¡Fruta peluda de araña! Conocidos como el achotillo o el rambután, esta fruta extraña tiene una cáscara como velcro rojo que cubre una fruta como una uva que contiene una semilla fibrosa.

Thanks for the updates! I had never heard of “Carnaval”! Also, your piercing looks rad! I used to have that pierced, too, but then when my piercing fell out I replaced it with a cheap piece of jewelry that was too small. Learn from my mistake and do not do that! I started a Rubik’s Cube solving club (Cub Cube Club) and we have our first competition this Saturday. I have eight students attending. Wish us luck!
