Soccer, English, and Birthdays – Fútbol, Inglés y cumpleaños

We’ve been in Ecuador for about three weeks now and routines have been established as the school schedules have normalized. The siblings head out, I get up, exercise a little bit, eat some breakfast, take a shower, begin the house cleaning routine, help out with lunch, pick up the twins, and so on and so forth. 

Ya son tres semanas que hemos estado aquí en Ecuador y las rutinas ya están establecidas con la normalización de los horarios escolares. Los hermanos se van, me levanto, hago un poco de ejercicio, como el desayuno, me baño, empiezo la limpieza de la casa, ayudo con el almuerzo, voy a ver a los gemelos, y así pasó el día.

Part of my routine is planning for English classes which are going pretty well if I do say so myself. Everyone’s getting comfortable and asking more questions and part of the lesson is spent laughing over the occasional slip up. For example, one of my students said he has two sisters. Those ‘sisters’ are also in the class and everyone lost it when they realized what these brothers had been called. Next week, we’ll be learning about baking and cooking and everyone will be coming over to make cookies on Tuesday so there will definitely be lots of photos about that in the next post.

Parte de mi rutina es el planear para las lecciones de Inglés que están yendo muy bien. Todos se están acostumbrando y preguntando más y ahora parte de la lección se pasa riendo. Por ejemplo, uno de mis estudiantes dijo que tenía dos hermanas. Esas ‘hermanas’ están en la misma clase y todos empezaron a reír al darse cuenta de lo que se ha dicho sobre estos hermanos. La próxima semana vamos a aprender sobre cocinar y hornear y todos van a venir a la clase para hacer galletas. (Se va a ver las fotos de esto en la próxima publicación.)

Recently, we have spent the evenings with the rest of the family, the men watching soccer while the children race around and the older girls do homework and listen to music, occasionally breaking out into dance.

En los días pasados, hemos pasado las noches con el resto de la familia, los hombres viendo el fútbol mientras los niños juegan y las chicas más grandes hacen su tarea y escuchan música, ocasionalmente bailando.

Today was a special day, as we celebrated two birthdays of our cousins (technically my father’s but they’re closer to our age) Anna-María (18) and Panchito (9). We all ate lasagna for dinner and enjoyed the cake Ameli had made afterwards.

Hoy era un día especial porque celebramos dos cumpleaños de nuestros primos Anna-María (18) y Panchito (9). Todos comimos lasaña para la cena y disfrutamos el pastel que hizo la Ameli.

Now I’m just chilling here, on the floor again since the internet connection is just being difficult like that. The cacophony of noise that is the ecuavoley is barely obstructed by our window, as the drunken shouts of the volleyball players fill the air. Earlier, you could hear the sound of a band accompanied by yumbos (traveling clowns, of sorts) celebrating the fiestas de San Isidro. (More details on that later.) I’m looking forward to this weekend, our dance classes officially beginning and a baking project with my tía Sole taking place soon after I get back from that. I also realize that the home meet for cross country is this weekend, so go Cubs and I hope everyone has a good time running on the beach! I miss the ocean and running and cross country but alas, I shall have to do my best to be supportive from afar.

Ahora aquí estoy, sentada en el piso porque la conección del Internet es muy débil. Afuera la bulla del ecuavoley llena la noche y se puede escuchar una banda de yumbos celebrando las fiestas de San Isidro. Esta fin de semana, tenemos las clases de baile y tengo un proyecto de hornear con la Sole después de eso. Ya me di cuenta de que esta fin de semana también hay el conjunto de campo traviesa de Newport, así que vamos Cubs y espero que todos disfruten la playa! Extraño a la playa y el correr y campo traviesa pero así es y voy a hacer mi mejor esfuerzo en apoyar el equipo desde aquí.
