Hello everyone! February is flying by and lots of stuff has been happening so I’m gonna try my best to tell y’all about all that’s been going on.
¡Saludos a todos! Febrero esta pasando rapidísimo y muchas cosas han pasado entonces voy a hacer mi mejor esfuerzo para explicarles todo lo que ha pasado.
This past week has been filled with performances, concerts, and lots of music. As you already know, Monday I had a recital with the Andean and Jazz Ensemble and this Wednesday I had another recital with the Afro Ensemble. It’s always a good time when we play together and we’re working towards being the best we can be for the festival coming up.
La semana pasada ha sido llena de presentaciones, conciertos, y mucha música. Como ya saben, el lunes pasado tuve un recital con el Ensamble Andino y el Ensamble de Jazz y este miércoles tuve otro recital con el Ensamble Afro. Siempre nos divertimos cuando tocamos juntos y estamos trabajando en mejor lo más que podamos para el festival que viene.
On Friday, my parents and cousin Memo went to a concert for the band Chila Jatun. This Bolivian group is made up of the sons of Los Kjarkas, a still-active Andean music group that has been around for over forty years.
Mis papas y primo Memo se fueron el viernes a un concierto del grupo Chila Jatun. Este grupo Boliviano esta compuesto de los hijos de los Kjarkas, un grupo de música Andina que sigue en existencia ya más de cuarenta años.
This child was on stage as well, undoubtedly one of the grandchildren of the dynasty.
Este niñito también estaba en el escenario, sin duda era uno de los nietos de la dinastía.
We were out of the house by midday on Saturday and on the bus to Otavalo for the Otavalo Festival Internacional. This music festival would feature the likes of Kalamarka and Yarina performing, both groups I had grown up listening to.
El sábado, salimos de la casa al medio día y nos subimos al bus a Otavalo para el Otavalo Festival Internacional. Este festival de música donde se presentaban los de Kalamarka y Yarina, ambos grupos que había crecido escuchando.
Walking through the Plaza de Ponchos in Otavalo, you can find an array of items from hand-beaded jewelry to ponchos (of course). You can also choose to eat from any number of street food vendors though I would definitely proceed with caution.
These ponchos and hammocks have such beautiful patterns though buying them can be a hassle, since people tend to take one look at Mother and they raise the price because she is a “tourist” and has money.
Caminando por la Plaza de Ponchos en Otavalo, puedes encontrar una variedad de cosas como joyería de cuentas hechos a mano y ponchos (obviamente). También puedes escoger donde comer de los innumerables vendedores de comida callejera aunque tienes que tener mucho cuidado.
Estos ponchos y hamacas se ven tan hermosas pero para comprar son un relajo debido al hecho de que los vendedores saben verle a mi mamá como “turista” y de plata.
Some of the older buildings are being remodeled into swanky hotels and hostals like this one.
Están remodelando algunos de los edificios viejos y convirtiéndolos en hoteles y hostales estilosos como esta.
While we did one last lap through town before dinner, we passed by countless shops decked out for Valentine’s Day. Most of the items were your typical gift items: chocolates, balloons, plushies… However there was one item that stood out from the rest: this adorable dog made out of flowers.
Mientras caminamos por la ciudad una vez más antes de cenar, pasamos por varias tiendas decoradas para el día del amor y la amistad. La mayoría de las cosas que vendían eran los regalos típicos: chocolates, globos, peluches… Pero vimos algo diferente del resto: este perrito adorable hecho de flores.
We showed up for the concert around 8:30 and the opening act started at nine. Jilgueros was the name of the group and they played a variety of huaynos, a traditional Peruvian rhythm.
Llegamos al concierto a las 8:30 y el acto que iniciaron el festival empezó a las nueve. Empezaron los Jilgueros y tocaron una variedad de huaynos, un ritmo tradicional de Perú.
Arguably the biggest and most well-known act of the night was Kalamarka, a Bolivian band that has been performing for around thirty five years. Even though I can’t name most of their songs, I recognized the majority of the tunes and it was all very nostalgic.
In this photo, you can kind of make out the dancers that presented a traditional Bolivian dance of Tobas, complete with spears and feather headdresses, that is danced during Carnaval season.
Se podría decir que el grupo más grande y reconocido del festival eran los Kalamarka, un grupo Boliviano que iniciaron su carrera hace unos treinta y cinco años. Aunque no puedo nombrar la mayoría de las canciones, reconocí casi todas y fue algo muy nostálgico.
En esta foto puedes ver los bailarines que presentaron un baile Boliviano de Tobas, completos con lanzas y tocados de plumas, que se baile durante la temporada del Carnaval.
Since we were at the concert as a family (along with Agustín), we reached our limit around 1:30 in the morning and soon began the walk back to the hostal. We enjoyed a nice breakfast on our way out of Otavalo and spent some time just outside of Quiroga, checking out the property my father had just bought the last week. Finally, we were on the bus home and on it they played the 2018 version of “Overboard,” which was actually kind of good, much to my surprise.
Como nos fuimos al concierto como familia (acompañados por el Agustín), llegamos a nuestro límite alrededor de la 1:30 de la mañana y empezamos a caminar de vuelta al hostal. Disfrutamos de un desayuno bien rico saliendo de Otavalo y pasamos un tiempo afuera de Quiroga, viendo la propiedad que recién se había comprado mi papá la semana pasada. Por fin, subimos al bus para regresar a casa y estaban dando la película de “Overboard” del año 2018, y me sorprendí porque era una película más o menos buena.
Arriving home, Andrés at the last of the malasadas (custard-filled donuts) that we had made that Friday. (The twins had been inspired to make them after watching an episode of Pokémon.)
Llegando a casa, Andrés se comió la última de las malasadas (donuts rellenos de natilla) que hicimos el viernes. (Los mellizos se inspiraron a hacer estos después de ver un episodio de Pokémon.)
An eventful way to end (and begin) the week, we spent the rest of the day lazing about and resting before end-of-semester exams. And with that, I will end this post.
