llamas nearly trampled us – llamas casi nos atropellaron

December is here. The month of cold, wet weather and days that get shorter and shorter. Well, that’s what it’s like in Oregon and the northern part of the Americas. Here on the Equator, winter doesn’t really exist? It has been kind of cold and rainy but it has also been sunny and extremely hot within the same day. This is especially annoying when I don’t bring a rain jacket or umbrella when I go out because of the cloudless sky and then by the time I get out of the university, thunder follows the flashes of lightning as the rain pours from the dark clouds. But enough about the weather, here’s what happened since the last post.

Diciembre a llegado. El mes de clima fría y mojada, donde los días se hacen más y más cortas. Bueno, así es en Oregon y en el norte de las Américas. Aquí en el Ecuador, ¿invierno no existe? Sí ha sido frío y lluvioso pero en el mismo día puede hacer mucho sol y calor. Esto es muy molesto porque no salgo con chompa de lluvia o paraguas porque no hay ninguna nube en el cielo pero después de salir de la U relámpagos suenan después de los rayos que caen mientras la lluvia cae de las nubes oscuras. Pero no hablamos más del tiempo, esto es lo que pasó desde la última vez que escribí.

The school week passed by like it usually does, marimba music and all. However, it was exam time here at the U and I got to take an exam on Afro-Ecuadorian instruments which I’m pretty sure I passed, at least.

La semana escolar pasó como siempre, con música de marimba y todo. Pero, también era tiempo de exámenes aquí en la U entonces tomé un examen sobre los instrumentos afro-ecuatorianos y creo que saqué una calificación buena.

On Friday and Saturday, my mother and I danced with our dance troupe (Asociación Centro de Formación Danza e Identidad) at two presentations for the Fiestas de Quito. The first was memorable since we danced on a stage in the middle of a dusty, dirt field. The second was just as memorable as we had to dance upon arriving at the event due to another group not showing up on time.

Viernes y sábado mi mamá y yo nos presentamos con nuestro elenco de baile (Asociación Centro de Formación Danza e Identidad) en dos presentaciones para las Fiestas de Quito. El primero era bien memorable porque el escenario estaba en medio de una cancha de tierra bien polvorienta. La segunda presentación también era memorable porque tuvimos que bailar casi en el mismo instante que llegamos porque otro grupo no llegó a tiempo.

We were having a grand old time in the Metropolitano on Sunday when we were nearly run over by llamas.

Estábamos pasando el tiempo bien en el Metropolitano el domingo cuando casi nos atropellaron unas llamas.

In a spur of the moment decision, I decided to take part in a parade by the Plataforma with the dance troupe and while it was very entertaining, it was also a bit painful since I was wearing heels that were just too small.

Al último momento decidí tomar parte del desfile que pasó por la Plataforma con el elenco y aunque fue muy entretenido, también era un poco doloroso porque estaba puesta unos tacos que eran bastante pequeñas.

Today began early with a soundcheck at the teatro universitario (university theater) for the performance with the Afro Ensemble. The symphonic, guitar, and jazz-traditional fusion ensembles also took part in this presentation that was put together to showcase the great variety of music promoted by the university itself. The performance began late (as expected), the sound people did a terrible job, and our performance was cut short but we all had a good time just doing what we love. 

Empecé este día temprano con una prueba de sonido en el teatro universitario para la presentación con el Afro Ensemble. La sinfónica, guitarra, y jazz-tradicional fusión ensemble también se presentaron en esta presentación diseñado para mostrar la gran variedad de música que promueve la universidad. La presentación empezó tarde (como esperamos), las sonidistas eran horribles, y nos cortaron la presentación pero nos divertimos haciendo lo que nos gusta.

What a strange life this is, between nearly being trampled by llamas to singing on stage with a group of friends who love the music they play. I should get some rest now since tomorrow is a day full of learning and new experiences. Goodnight!

Que rara es esta vida, entre casi siendo atropellado por unas llamas a cantando en un escenario con un grupo de amigos que aman la música que tocan. Ya me voy a descansar porque mañana es otro día de aprender y nuevas experiencias. ¡Buenas noches!
