An Early Thanksgiving – Un Thanksgiving temprano

Wow, another week gone by and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Wait, nevermind about that. We actually already celebrated Thanksgiving this last Saturday but more on that later… Let’s just jump right into this week’s happenings, shall we?

Wow, otra semana ha pasado y ya mismo vamos a celebrar Thanksgiving. Espera, olvida eso. De hecho, ya celebramos Thanksgiving el sábado pasado pero ya mismo les voy a contar sobre eso… Bueno, seguimos con lo que ha pasado esta semana.

Nothing very memorable happened during the week, just the usual routine. I did sing at a wake for a neighbor but that’s the only thing that happened that really stood out.

Casi nada pasó entre semana, sólo la rutina diaria. Canté para un velorio de unos vecinos pero eso es la única cosa que era fuera de lo normal.

Friday was a different story altogether and all sorts of strange things happened that day. I went to the University as usual except that I wound up practicing with a different ensemble. It was a fusion ensemble that played a combination of jazz and traditional andean music. Not what I expected at all but it was fun to play along with the zampoña. 

Viernes era completamente diferente y todo tipo de cosas extrañas pasaron ese día. Me fui a la U como siempre pero terminé practicando con otro ensamble. Era un ensamble de fusión que tocaba música jazz y tradicional andino. No era algo que esperaba pero sí me divertí tocando la zampoña.

I was walking out of the arts facility when I stopped to talk with some friends about the concert series that was going on that day at the University’s stadium. This concert series, known as the Centralazo, is one of the events to kick off the fiestas de Quito (festivities celebrating the founding of Quito). I almost went but I wasn’t feeling so good and my friends told me I really wasn’t missing out on much so I just went home.

Estaba saliendo de la facultad de artes cuando me paré a hablar con unos compañeros de clase sobre la serie concierto que estaba ocurriendo en el estadio de la Universidad ese día. Esta serie de conciertos, llamado el Centralazo, es uno de los eventos que inicia las fiestas de Quito (festividades celebrando la fundación de Quito). Casi me fui pero no me sentía muy bien y mis amigos dijeron que no era tan bueno entonces regresé a casa.

After finishing up my English class at Santiago’s, I found out that the Centralazo had been cancelled due to a stampede that had resulted in the death of one student and twenty people were injured. I was immediately relieved that I hadn’t stayed but it made me so frustrated and sad that there had been such a lack of security at the event and that people could just trample someone like that, all because they don’t want to pay the four dollar entrance fee… 

Después de acabar la clase de inglés donde la casa del Santiago, me enteré de que habían cancelado el Centralazo debido a un estampida de gente que había resultado en la muerte de una estudiante y unos veinte heridos. Inmediatamente sentí un alivio de no haber ido pero también me sentía frustrada y triste por la falta de seguridad en el evento y el hecho de que las personas podían aplastar a esa chica en la estampida, solo porque no querían pagar la entrada de cuatro dólares… 

On a lighter note, we got the family together to make several pies for our Thanksgiving dinner the next day. We made all sorts, from pumpkin to apple to banana cream and several more.

Pasando a otra tema más agradable, juntamos a la familia para hacer varias pies para nuestra cena de Thanksgiving el día siguiente. Hicimos todo tipo de pie, de zapallo a manzana a plátano y mucho más.

Saturday morning dance seemed to drag on and on as we attempted to memorize several dances last minute for the growing number of performances we have in the weeks ahead. We finally escaped and got home to finish prepping for Thanksgiving dinner.

Sábado de mañana el tiempo pasó lentamente mientras tratábamos de memorizar bailes antes de estas siguientes semanas llenas de presentaciones. Escapamos por fin y llegamos a casa para acabar de preparar para la cena de Thanksgiving.

We went out to a cultural event on Sunday morning in the Parque La Carolina. This event was an ‘encounter for peace and our rights’ and an event that celebrated the Afro-Ecuadorian culture. (The event was originally meant to take place in October but due to the protests, it was rescheduled for this month.) There were several artists that performed on stage, including a group of traditional Esmeraldeñan music, a troupe of young dancers, and even a mixed-race and mixed-gender rap group. 

Salimos a un evento cultural en la mañana del domingo en el Parque La Carolina. Este evento era un ‘encuentro por la paz y nuestros derechos’ y un evento en donde se celebraba la cultura Afro-Ecuatoriana. (Originalmente este evento era programado para octubre pero debido a las manifestaciones que ocurrieron ese mes, movieron el evento para este mes.) Había varias artistas que se presentaron en el escenario, incluyendo un grupo de música esmeraldeña, un elenco de bailarinas jóvenes, y hasta había un grupo de mixta-raza y mixto-género de rap.

Sadly, the people in charge of the sound were doing an awful job. They mixed up tracks for the dance troupe and even had the audacity to turn off the mic as one of the leader’s of these Afro-Ecuadorian organizations was in the middle of calling out the racism that was inherent in the system of both the government and society. There had also been controversy over the placement of the poster for the event and the event organizers had to fight to even have it somewhere visible which made no sense. What is so bad about putting up a poster that clearly states what the event is about? It was incredibly oppressive and the fact that they would rather have a poster about inclusiveness with a dog on it, was absolutely ridiculous.

Tristemente, las personas que estaban a cargo del sonido no estaban haciendo un buen trabajo. Se equivocaron de canciones para el elenco de bailarinas y hasta apagaron el micrófono de uno de los líderes de una de las organizaciones Afro-Ecuatorianas mientras él criticó el racismo de la sistema de gobierno y la sociedad.También hubo mucho discusión sobre la colocación del póster para el evento y los organizadores tuvieron que pelear por tener el póster en un lugar donde se podía ver. ¿Cómo puede ser tan malo tener un póster específico para el evento? Es totalmente opresivo y el hecho de que quisieron poner un póster sobre la inclusión que tiene un cachorro, es completamente ridículo.

All in all, this week has been a strange one but Thanksgiving was a success and eating pie for breakfast is never a bad thing. I hope everyone enjoys their break and their time with family!
